Deuxième journée de Rock en Seine, le soleil (de plomb) est toujours au beau fixe. Mais les artistes ne flanchent pas sous la chaleur, quelle dévotion ! Au fil des scènes, on découvre le garage de Kaviar Special, et le rock désincarné de JoyCut, on ne résiste une fois de plus pas à l’appel de La Femme, on est comme toujours subjugués par le chant des sirènes de Sigur Ros, et on reste hypnotisés par Massive Attack.

Kaviar special

C’est probablement l’heure la plus chaude de la journée. Le soleil dans les yeux, les Rennais ne peuvent pas voir que toute la foule est sagement installée à l’ombre sous la colline. Dès l’intro ils font vibrer leurs guitares, et foutent tranquillement la pression en crescendo. D’un ‘Starving’, doucement rock’n’roll, le rythme s’accélère, pour aller flirter du côté des Black Lips (mais en moins faux). De larsens en roulements de batterie, les Kaviar Special vont réussir à motiver les alanguis à rejoindre la fosse en plein cagnard.

JoyCut

Sur une longue montée à lasers, le trio italien semble annoncer la fin du monde. Et en même temps, si leur musique aux faux airs d’eurodance revient à la mode, c’est fort possible. Mais à y regarder de plus près, JoyCut c’est une sorte de dream à deux batteries synchrones – ou plutôt une batterie et tout un arsenal de percussions qui part bientôt en mode tribal.

Il est peut-être un peu tôt dans la journée pour le vocoder, mais le son se fait plus organique au fur et à mesure du set : on entend la mer, on entend des cuivres, et finalement le clavieriste va s’emparer d’une guitare et d’un micro pour (c)hanter. JoyCut offre une belle montée en pression très rock pour le coup, et au moment d’exploser, débouche sur un retour de guitare vibrant, et une chute d’objets métalliques. Il faudrait plus d’un set pour les décrypter, mais la foule applaudit déjà en rythme, conquise.

La Femme

La foule est dense devant la scène de la Cascade, où ils ont joué il y a deux ans à peine (pourquoi ne sont-ils pas passés sur la Grande scène ?). Certes, on les a déjà vus il y a deux semaines à peine, mais difficile de résister à un concert de La Femme. Et pour le coup, non seulement le set a changé, avec l’apparition de leur nouveau single, ‘Septembre’, mais leur look aussi ! L’ambiance est aux fêtes de Bayonne sur scène, sauf Marlon, qui a apparemment pris des hallucinogènes avant de se colorer les cheveux. Avec sa boucle d’oreille, il est prêt à nous dire la bonne aventure.

Après avoir dansé sur la toujours trop courte ‘Unisex’, la foule accueille Marlon et son keytar dans la fosse. Puis La Femme ne pouvant pas lancer la chenille dans la fosse comme à La Route du Rock, ils se lancent dans une danse folklorique sur ‘It’s Time To Wake Up (2023)’. Ce jeu de scène décalé semble nous rappeler qu’ils sont des artistes Born Bad. Avec des jolies ritournelles sur ‘Où va le monde’, et des paroles glauques sur ‘SSD’ (pour Strasbourg Saint Denis) : « quand tu vomis dans la cuvette, tu vois la lumière au fond de ta tête ». Et qui peut foutre le boxon avec ses tubes, ‘Sur la planche’, et ‘Anti-taxi’.

Sigur Ros

Au milieu d’un festival, Sigur Ros offre une véritable parenthèse. Le chant, à la manière d’une fascinante aventure sous-marine, pousse à s’arrêter dans sa course, se poser sur un coin d’herbe et s’allonger pour chercher les étoiles des yeux. En inventant leur propre langue, incompréhensible, les Islandais ont trouvé un toucher universel, qui parle à tout le monde. Chacun peut projeter ce qu’il veut, comme une plongée dans un rêve.

A trois sur scène, Sigur Ros parvient à obtenir un son monumental, alliant la puissance tribale de la batterie aux légers crissements de guitares sous l’archet de Jonsi. La pureté de sa voix semble avoir le pouvoir de détruire l’obscurité : sur ‘E-Bow’, il semblerait bien qu’il pleure, mais une déflagration vient le relever, pour remonter vers un chant plus léger, plus positif.

On se laisse porter par les guitares languissantes de ‘Popplagið’, et toute la fosse clappe pour accompagner un final violent mais doux. Le morceau finit en explosion de lasers arc-en-ciel. On se relève pour réaliser qu’une larme a coulé sur notre joue. Ce soir, Rock en Seine vu une aurore boréale.

Après Sigur Ros, l’ambiance de ce samedi soir s’annonce moins festif qu’anticipé. Et ce n’est pas le trip-hop de Massive Attack qui va l’améliorer ! L’envie nous titille d’aller voir les Naive New Beaters pour danser un peu… Mais bientôt on se retrouve scotchés par les Britanniques, et notamment par le duo 3D et Daddy G sur ‘Risingson’. Pourtant, à la manière d’un Archive, Massive Attack nous rappelle qu’ils sont avant tout un collectif, aussi à chaque chanson, un nouvel interprète.

Ainsi, Mushroom revient pour ‘Man Next Door’, le chanteur Kayus Bankole de Young Fathers vient en guest très impliqué, et Tricky fera sa première apparition avec le groupe à Paris pour ‘Take It There’, rythmé par de violents spasmes. Mais le clou du spectacle sera le retour de Shara Nelson. Cependant, il reste difficile de se plonger dans leur discographie à cause des interludes rendu assez longs du fait de ce dispositif.

Mais ce qui dérange, ce sera toute cette scénographie, basée sur des recherches google à partir de mots-clés. Sur ‘Girl I Love You’, on voit aléatoirement Edward Snowden, Anne Frank, Sigmund Freud, Camille Pissaro, Rachel Weisz… et M.I.A ! Epris de conscience politique, 3D s’exprime sur le burkini, puis sur le Brexit en introduction d’‘Eurochild’, pendant que “Comme si de rien n’était” et tous les résultats associés s’affichent en fond d’écran. Enfin, pour ‘Safe From Harm’, des noms de pays défilent, rappelant les horreurs de notre monde moderne, de la Syrie à la Palestine en passant par le génocide arménien. Et pendant que le groupe quitte la scène : « Je suis Charlie, Paris, Orlando, Bruxelles, Istanbul, Nice, Baghdad, Bengladesh, Kaboul, Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. Je suis ici. »

Sur cette note, tous les douloureux souvenirs refont surface, Massive Attack nous laisse sur leur ‘Unfinished Sympathy’. La crise d’angoisse nous guette dans cette foule qui se déverse vers les sorties de secours. On aurait dû aller danser comme des dégénérés avec les Naive New Beaters.

    Petite coquille: ce n’est pas Mushroom mais (la légende) Horace Andy qui a interprété (comme sur disque) “Angel” et “Man Next Door” sur le set de Massive Attack.
