Premier jour de la Route du Rock, et le moins qu’on puisse dire c’est que le soleil n’est pas au rendez-vous ! A l’arrivée au Fort de Saint-Père, ce sont plutôt d’immenses flaques qui attendent les festivaliers En Bretagne versatile, sans botte, point d’issu ! Ce qui n’a pas empêché de profiter de la riche programmation entre deux averses : The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile and the Violators, Real Estate, Thee Oh Sees, The Fat White Family et Caribou.

The War On Drugs


Avec un troisième album, Lost in the Dream, dans les bacs, The War on Drugs commence à s’imposer comme un groupe incontournable de l’americana. Doucement, les tambourins viennent rythmer les mélodies légèrement groovy, les harmonies viennent renforcer les refrains et les solos prennent enfin leur envol. Au détour d’une innocente introduction au piano, les claviers éthérés deviennent plus percutants tandis que la chaleur du sax baryton réchauffe doucement le public qui guette plein d’espoir les arcs-en-ciel. Les instrumentations se font plus psychédéliques sans perdre de leur puissance, et les problèmes techniques – probablement liés à la pluie – rendent le set d’autant plus épique.

Kurt Vile & the Violators


Dans la même lignée que The War On Drugs, Kurt Vile and The Violators viennent relayer les Pennsylvaniens sur la (grande) Scène du Fort. De fait, Kurt Vile s’est échappé de la guerre contre les drogues en 2008 pour s’élancer en solo. Mais l’amitié qui le lie à Adam Granduciel reste solide, puisque ce dernier montera sur scène l’accompagner. Néanmoins, leur amour partagé pour Bob Dylan est difficile à ignorer, et le set de Kurt Vile devient quelque peu redondant. Le public apprécie les explosions de guitares à grands renforts de jeux de lumière, mais il serait temps de danser pour résister au froid. Et ce n’est pas le rappel acoustique du guitar hero qui va aider.

Real Estate


Pour faire danser, Real Estate repassera, mais côté mélodies, ces Américains savent s’imposer. Les légères harmonies de leur nouvel album Atlas viennent tendrement chauffer les âmes. Des compositions planantes se suivent, plongeant la foule dans une gentille rêverie… jusqu’à ce qu’un incident technique les force à trouver un sujet de conversation pour faire patienter le public. Mais en vain ! Les instrumentations atmosphériques n’arriveront pas à retenir les curieux qui commencent à s’éloigner. Qu’à cela ne tienne, les fans feront voler des bulles de savon, et rappelleront le groupe à grands cris pour éviter ce dur retour à la réalité boueuse.

Thee Oh Sees

Enfin, John Dwyer et sa bande Thee Oh Sees viennent réveiller les esprits avec leur punk brut. La batterie roule, les morceaux s’enchaînent rapidement… Cette nouvelle formation live depuis le hiatus de fin 2013 fait la part belle aux mélodies. Elles ne survolent plus les compositions comme par le passé, elles s’obstinent désormais à s’immiscer malgré les réticences du chanteur. Entre éclairs de folies et fulgurances de génie, l’infatigable leader balance ses riffs et ses paroles sans un regard. Les morceaux deviennent hypnotiques, mais toujours aussi violents. Finalement, cette courte pause de quelques mois aura été bénéfique.

The Fat White Family


Dans cette famille, tout est dans l’attitude : t-shirt crades et cheveux gras sont de rigueur. Mais bientôt, les sales gosses tombent leurs fringues pour laisser apparaître de jolis tatouages en forme de coeur sur leurs torses imberbes. Entre deux cris, la basse s’impose face à la guitare, les claviers se font dantesques et la batterie s’égare sur des sentiers improbables. C’est décapant et pourtant accessible, c’est marrant et intéressant, et surtout c’est bientôt le foutoir sur scène où les garçons commencent à rivaliser de virilité déplacée. Ca chante à tue-tête, tels de jeunes étudiants d’école de commerce un jeudi soir dans une quelconque rue de la soif. Puis sans prévenir, The Fat White Family partent en transe, surfant sur des guitares qui crissent toujours plus loin. A revoir !

Caribou


Le clou de la soirée ! Dan Snaith et sa bande venaient habiller la soirée d’une electro fine et jouissive. Tout de blanc vêtus, les Canadiens s’évertuent gentiment à captiver l’attention. Cependant, engourdi par la nuit fraîche, le public attend plus. Or Caribou est un diesel, les introductions s’éternisent, les rythmiques tribales – pourtant jouées sur un réel kit de batterie – sont molassonnes, et après une demi-heure de set, le concert n’est toujours pas lancé. Le bassiste se prend les pieds dans ses chœurs et les enchaînements sont flemmards… ‘Odessa’ et ‘Can’t Do Without You’ font bien monter le set d’un cran, mais le dancefloor ne cramera pas longtemps, puisqu’on replonge aussitôt dans la torpeur contemplatrice du doux ‘Sun’. Caribou semble avoir fait dans le minimum syndical comme on dit vulgairement. C’est dommage, tout le monde était réellement impatient de découvrir leur nouveau Our Love en live.

    […] Après les efficaces The War On Drugs, il est temps de refaire mugir les amplis. Mais Mogwai est plus subtil que ça, puisque les Ecossais démarrent leur set sur ‘Heard About You Last Night’, qui rappelle leur travail sur la bande-son de la série Les Revenants. La foule amadouée, leur monumental ‘I’m Jim Morrison I’m Dead’ commence à prendre tout l’espace de la Grande halle. Pour le festival, Mogwai adapte son set afin de replonger dans leur longue discographie, et prouver que malgré leurs compositions instrumentales, les Ecossais ne se répètent pas. On passe ainsi d’un ‘Travel is Dangerous’ aux espiègles montées d’intensité, à l’abrasif ‘Rano Pano’ du fameux Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will. De la finesse de ‘Mogwai Fear Satan’, la batterie tisse un filet de sécurité pour que quand tout explose, les tensions puissent se relâcher et l’électricité gagner la foule. Après ‘Deesh’ et le ‘Remurdered’ du dernier Rave Tape, Mogwai présente ‘Teenage Exorcist’, un extrait du nouvel EP Music Industry 3 Fitness Industry 1 (toujours ces titres improbables !), avant de revenir sur un ‘We’re No Here’ afin de contenter tous les types de fans.
