Eurocks 2013 – Jour 4

Dernier jour des Eurockéennes. Autant dire qu’on est cuits. Mais on a trouvé le moyen d’être là à l’heure pour les Palma Violets, la force de voir Keny Arkana, on a pas trop loupé The Vaccines car c’est eux qui avaient du retard (leur excuse c’est d’avoir assuré la première partie des Rolling Stones à Hyde Park). On a enchaîné avec The Black Angels et réussi à pas s’endormir devant Tame Impala, puis on a supporté Skunk Anansie et dansé sur Blur. Une bien belle journée !
Palma Violets
Au début, on ne comprend pas vraiment pourquoi le bassiste gesticule autant et le chanteur s’égosille dans une jolie chemise à fleur. Comment Steve Mackay de Pulp a-t-il pu tomber dans le panneau de ces chansons composées à la sortie d’un bar au petit matin ? Mais au fur et à mesure du set, l’agressivité du bassiste, surnommé Chilli, se devine comme un enthousiasme – voire un sérieux problème d’attention, ce qui expliquerait la brièveté des morceaux.
On adore leur ode à un fut de batterie, sûrement composé par leur machine de guerre rythmique qui donne l’impression de casser le matériel à chaque roulement. On aime le contraste entre la nonchalance du guitariste, qui déclare sa flamme à la foule autant qu’il peut, avec le bassiste qui montre les dents, et pousse des cris déchirants sur ‘Best of Friends’.
Petit à petit, les morceaux se font légèrement plus structurés, mais surtout plus mélodiques, et la foule se laisse peu à peu aller sur ‘Last of the summer wine’. Et si pour le final ils ne peuvent faire monter tous leurs fans comme à leur habitude, l’esplanade Greenroom se transforme tout de même en boxon pour l’hymne ‘14’ suivi de ‘Brand New Song’ et Chilli profite de la confusion pour descendre rejoindre son public. Joli moment !

Tame Impala
Au son des guitares psychédéliques, ce set prend la forme d’une petite sieste à l’Esplanade. On se laisse hypnotiser par les gribouillis colorés qui défilent sur les écrans et on écoute les improvisations qu’ont concoctées les Australiens. La batterie vient doucement contraster les instrumentations planantes, et pour pimenter la balade, Kevin Parker s’amuse à mêler les morceaux. On a l’impression de se perdre en chemin mais en effet, entre ‘Music To Walk Home By‘ et ‘Solitude Is Bliss‘, il n’y a qu’un pas. De la même manière, le blues de ‘Half Full Glass of Wine‘ de leur premier EP, débouche sur ‘Elephant’, le premier single de Lonerism. Liant ses deux albums, le compositeur montre l’évolution, l’ouverture dont il a été capable en se faisant confiance. Et il le prouve sur l’irrésistible ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’.
Skunk Anansie
La batterie se fait entendre en premier, mais Skin le rattrape bien rapidement. La scène se transforme en ring, sur lequel la boxeuse cherche à s’imposer face à la double grosse caisse de Cass. Tout le concert, la chanteuse, qui approche des 45 ans, saute partout, en permanence, sans arrêt. En combinaison moulante transparente, elle semble chercher à faire oublier les années : non Skunk Anansie n’a pas splitté, non les nouveaux albums ne sont pas qu’un prétexte pour tourner.
Mais à force de faire sa gym en levant ses chaussures argentées bien haut, sa voix n’arrive pas à suivre. Elle s’efforce, s’époumone, mais arrive plus qu’essoufflée à attraper ses notes. Certes, le groupe donne de ses tripes, ne relâche pas le public d’un seul sourcil, mais si l’attention retombe, c’est parce que même si la performance est époustouflante, les compositions ne suivent pas. C’est la nostalgie qui attire la foule, et même si au détour d’une quête de ‘Hedonism (just because you feel good)’ on redécouvre un ‘Yes It’s Fucking Political’ ou un ‘Charlie Big Potatoe’, c’est qu’on en avait pas gardé un souvenir impérissable.

Pour clore en beauté cette 25e édition des eurockéennes, les programmateurs n’auraient pas pu trouver mieux. Damon Albarn se rappelle en effet être passé dans la région : il y a 18 ans déjà ! Pour cette tournée, pas de B-sides, que des tubes. Enchaînés, sans même le temps de voir les années défiler au fil des ‘Girls and Boys’ ou ‘Out of Time’. On retient au passage des petits moments attrapés au vol, comme de remarquer que Graham Coxon joue pieds nus, ou de voir Alex James sauter sur ‘Parklife’, le sourire émouvant de Coxon sur ‘Coffee & TV’, et la chemise trempée de sueur de Albarn sur ‘End of a Century’. Pour découvrir à la fin, que les paroles de Caramel étaient scotchée par terre… Par contre il manquait ‘Charmless Man‘ !
