Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed au Nouveau Casino
Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed a commencé sa carrière avec un album de reprises des années 60 qui a fait sensation. Comparé à James Brown, Otis Reading et Wilson Pickett, il s’est alors lancé dans les compos avec son groupe The True Love et vient de signer chez EMI pour son troisième album Come and Get It.

En première partie, le quintet Eldia balance de la pop fraîche et bien structurée. Si ce sont des français, cet aspect ne transpire pas dans leur son, calibré à la britannique. Quoi de mieux pour chauffer le Nouveau Casino archi-blindé ? Leur deuxième album Yayaya vient de sortir chez Discograph.

Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed joue à fond la carte des années 60s, jusqu’au microphone rétro. Le groupe aussi fait office de cliché : tout le monde en lunettes noires, sauf le synthé, qui, avec sa raie bien propre sur le côté, ressemble à un pasteur.

Les musiciens sont talentueux et le son est de bonne qualité , plongeant instantanément l’audience dans l’ambiance : un peu plus et je m’attends à voir des demoiselles en robes à fleurs – et la mode étant au vintage, on y est presque. Paperboy, qui passe tout d’abord pour frontman, tente de prouver le contraire sur ses balades, renvoyant ses troupes en coulisse pour affronter le public seul – ou presque.
Un blanc avec une voix soul, c’est pas commun, mais ça rappelle quelqu’un. Il pousse aussi à la comparaison, avec ses pattes et sa mèche et les bonnes joues. Le nom brûle les lèvres, mais personne n’osera le lâcher – dans la musique, certains noms s’apparentent à des divinités qu’il ne fait pas bon blasphémer. Pour parfaire le tableau, il manquait cependant la célèbre chorégraphie – mais en ce qui me concerne, je me suis rapidement lassée du énième sosie de la star de Graceland.
