Florence and The Machine a sorti cet été son troisième album studio How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful et n’en finit plus de combler les grandes scènes des plus gros festivals. Mais ce soir, la Londonienne aura droit à un minuscule Zenith, blindé par seulement’ six mille fans avides de harpe, de danse classique, de musique celtique, de costumes disco et de jolies chanson à reprendre à tue-tête… Etrangement, on retrouve en première partie les turbulents Palma Violets.

Les publics des deux groupes du soir sont par défaut peu compatibles, mais ça n’empêche les compatriotes de Florence Welch de jouer la carte rock’n roll attitude tout en alternant titres doux et pêchus. Après un début plutôt plaintif avec ‘Matador‘, un cracha du blond Alexander Jesson – toujours aussi insupportable -, ça enchaîne avec leur mémorable ‘Best of Friends‘, toujours aussi efficace. Ils invitent ensuite le public à agiter les mains en l’air… Un peu ringard mais l’audience ne se fait pas prier. Ils concluent avec leur Christmas-song, ‘Last Christmas on Earth‘, ballade hurlée et débraillée dont ils ont le secret.

Florence and the Machine


Le Zenith est maintenant fin prêt pour accueillir Florence Welch. Alors que les yeux sont braqués sur la scène, on distingue sa crinière rousse flamboyante dans le pit, devant la fosse. La chanteuse serre des mains derrière les crash-barrières puis grimpe sur scène en sautillant, pieds nus. Elle débute par un ancien titre, ‘What the Water Gave Me‘, dont le refrain est déjà entonné par le public, puis enchaîne par un spectaculaire ‘Ship to Wreck‘, extrait du dernier opus.

Aérienne, Florence ne cesse de virevolter, à la manière d’une danseuse étoile, d’un bout à l’autre de la scène, dans une tenue digne des plus grandes heures du groupe ABBA. Et après cinq minutes de concert, toutes les tribunes sont déjà debout et tapent dans leurs mains. Sur ‘Third Eye‘, Florence grimpe même sur le public de la fosse d’où elle reçoit des offrandes type couronnes de fleurs. Les arpèges de harpe sont des plus suaves mais ont le don de déclencher la folie dans la salle.

Sur le récent ‘Delilah‘, Florence se lance dans une démonstration de force : de sa voix puissante, elle part dans des envolées lyriques avec son tremolo si particulier. On a tout de même pu distinguer quelques erreurs de ton, mais à sa décharge, elle saute partout sans s’économiser. Par contre, elle ne lésine pas sur les postures qui rappellent fortement Céline Dion. Certes, ces références font partie du personnage, mais quand même…

Pendant le concert, la chanteuse discute pas mal avec le public, saluant son père au passage, et partageant des anecdotes. Puis elle envoie un “Je t’aime Paris” avant d’entamer en piano-voix ‘You’ve Got The Love‘. Le zénith n’attendait que ça ! Bientôt, six mille voix s’unissent pour reprendre ce refrain devenu un des standards de la pop. Sur le final de ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful‘, titre éponyme du dernier album, les musiciens apportent une touche épique avec de magnifiques envolées de cuivres. Pendant ce temps, Florence fait des mouvements à la X-OR pour encore mieux enchaîner avec ‘Shake It Out‘, hymne aux accents celtiques.

Sur ‘What Kind of Man‘, la ballerine va jusqu’à appliquer sa main sur la tête de ses fans comme pour les bénir. Mais c’est ‘Dog Days Are Over‘, autre titre emblématique du premier album, qui fait exploser de joie le Zenith. Enfin, après avoir demandé à la foule de lui envoyer une fringue, elle réclame que tout le monde s’enlace.

Son rappel sera touchant, avec une reprise du ‘All You Need Is Love‘ des Beatles, avec l’impressionnante intro sur la Marseillaise parfaitement maîtrisée par ses cuivres. Son message d’amour et de soutien à la France est à peine masqué, d’autant que la scène est recouverte de lights tricolores. Mais le meilleur est pour le dernier titre, sur lequel débarquent The Maccabees, pour leur version d”I Love You All The Time‘ des Eagles Of Death Metal ! Un final pareil, c’est un vrai cadeau de Noël.
