Deuxième jour du Primavera Sound sous le soleil de Porto ! C’est vendredi et à la sortie du boulot, tout le monde s’est précipité vers le parc de la cité, au bord de la mer, pour profiter du festival décidément familial. Le Transistor a pu apercevoir les sombres Viet Cong, l’ultime Patti Smith, le doux José Gonzalez, les revenants The Replacements, le polémique Sun Kil Moon, et les habiles Movement.

Viet Cong

Certains objecteront qu’il est trop tôt pour du Viet Cong, et ils n’auront pas tout à fait tort. C’est sûrement pourquoi le groupe commence par leur chanson la plus enlevée, ‘Throw It Away’, presque math-rock, un peu à la manière des And So I Watch You From Afar. Pourant Matt Flegel semble pouvoir se dissoudre à la manière d’un vampire exposé au soleil. Mais malgré les apparences, l’ensemble reste très enlevé et dansant.

D’une voix d’outre-tombe, Viet Cong sombre dans l’imparable ‘Silhouette’. Mais le chant est trop en avant dans cette configuration pour le plein air. Sur album ou en salle, le chant est cerné par la basse lourde et la guitare crissante. L’intensité se perd un peu, mais pas pour tout le monde, car le batteur s’agite, penché sur ses fûts, la mèche péroxydée au vent. Pour redresser la barre, Viet Cong se fend d’un hurlement, tandis que l’orgue ‘March in Progress’ s’impose… Mais il est déjà temps de rejoindre Patti Smith !

Arrivés en haut de la colline, on est submergés par une vague de frissons qui accompagne la fin de ‘Gloria’. Bientôt, la foule danse sur ‘Redondo Beach’ et se retrouve pris par l’intensité de ‘Birdland’… Patti Smith tente ensuite nous bercer pour nous apaiser, mais ce seront les grosses guitares de ‘Free Money’ qui effaceront la douleur. Plus qu’elle ne chante, elle s’anime d’une flamme quand elle nous ordonne de rêver !

« Là c’était la face A, et maintenant il faut retourner le vinyle », s’amuse-t-elle avant d’entonner ‘Kimberly’. Patti Smith continue à retracer son premier album Horses, rapellant que la chanson ‘Break It Up’ était pour Jim Morrison. Telle une pythie, elle nous raconte sa vision sur ‘Land’ et harangue la foule jusqu’à ce que ses chevaux s’emballent pour reprendre ‘Gloria’, soutenu par la foule !

Enfin, avant de livrer son ‘Elegie’, Patti Smith énumère les grandes figures du rock qui ne sont plus de ce monde, et tout le monde sent sa gorge se serrer à mesure que la liste s’allonge… jusqu’à Lou Reed qui sera particulièrement salué. Comme à son habitude, pour finir sur une note plus optimiste, la légende vivante enchaînera ‘Because The Night’ et ‘People Have The Power’. Et alors qu’elle nous encourage à utiliser nos droits, l’âme encore adolescente se met à danser, pleine de légèreté !

Comme, de toute manière, Patti Smith nous a foutu une grande claque et n’a laissé aucune chance à ceux qui jouaient après elle ce soir, autant s’installer dans l’herbe et profiter de la prairie ensoleillée en écoutant José Gonzalez. Sur ‘What Will lt Be’, les percussions maghrébines sont une belle invitation à la danse, mais le cœur serré on ne peut se résoudre à oublier la performance magistrale à laquelle on vient d’assister. Alors on se délecte juste des jolis chœurs et belles harmonies, en attendant que l’émotion retombe tout doucement.

La surprise de cette programmation c’était The Replacements, qui n’avaient pas joué depuis 1991. Les grosses guitares bien aiguisées, les Américains se la joue un peu old school, à coup de longs solos de guitare bien dansants. Un style qui a l’époque était plus révolutionnaire qu’on ne le soupçonne. Et à regarder Paul Westerberg, en veste tweed et pantalon rouge, s’agiter… le air guitar commence à démanger tout le monde !

Les membres du groupe se plantent, recommencent, se marrent, et même si on comprend pas pourquoi, l’ambiance est bonne. Paul Westerberg et Tommy Stinson ont repris poliment les concerts en 2011, suivi d’une véritable tournée en 2014, et manifestement la scène leur avait cruellement manqué. Un set qui donne envie de se (re)plonger dans leur discographie quelque peu dissolue.

Sun Kil Moon

Le retour à des cieux plus indés semble de bon augure pour Mark Kozelek : sous la scène Pitchfork, la foule est suspendue à ses lèvres. Et peu importe qu’il reprenne ‘I Got You Babe’ avec Yasmine Hamdan qui ne connaît pas les paroles, ou qu’il balance une vanne par rapport à sa dissension avec The War On Drugs, la foule réagit, le bouscule, va jusqu’à le huer quand il en fait trop… mais Sun Kil Moon arrivera toujours à se rattraper.

Par sa présence, par sa voix cassée, par ses narrations qui emportent soudainement si loin dans ses souvenirs… Par moments, on a juste envie de rester à nager dans les limbes de ces chansons qui n’en finissent pas, qui flottent, survolées de chœurs comme sur ‘Carissa’. Même quand il s’égare sur son histoire de ‘The Possum’, étonnamment toute en tension, Mark Kozelek reste léger, quand sa voix assume tout le poids du morceau.

Le monde peut s’écrouler, entre les embardées au piano et les éclats déchirants, sa pop reste douce et tendre. Et s’il paraît effectivement perdre la raison, avec les émotions à fleur de peau comme un adolescent sur ‘This is My First Day and I’m Indian and I Work at a Gas Station’, la mélodie semble apaiser la foule. Sa générosité sera récompensée d’une ovation… ou alors ce sera pour saluer la patience des musiciens. L’un ou l’autre, bravo !

Movement

Après Ariel Pink qui se prenait pour Axl Rose, la scène Pitchfork accueillait le trio australien Movement. A écouter sur leur soundcloud, leur musique ne paraissait pas être la meilleure formule pour contrer la fatigue de la journée… Mais une fois encerclé de leur son, le chant aux accents r’n’b sur une electro profonde – mais sans prétention aucune -, commence à prendre le contrôle.

Cette soul sombre fait danser sans pousser à l’introspection – sûrement ce que tout festivalier redoute le plus un vendredi soir. Au contraire, cette voix douce et pourtant si entreprenante donne envie d’aller vers l’autre, de rencontrer ces inconnus qui nous entourent, voire de les embrasser. Et quand le set se finit, on se retrouve engoncé dans notre corps, frustré d’un concert trop court. A revoir donc !
