SxSW 2017 – mardi avec Slaves, Spiral Stairs et San Fermin

Deuxième jour du festival South By Southwest, on se balade dans les rue d’Austin, et saute de bar en bar pour découvrir de nouveaux sons : l’ingénieuse indie pop de San Fermin, les explosifs Shinobi Ninja, la pop naïve de Ratboys, le retour vers le futur Spiral Stairs aka Scott Kannberg de Pavement, le post-punk fascinant de Sextile, la shoegaze de Creepoid, et la sensation britannique du moment, le duo Slaves !

San Fermin

Il commence à faire beau, nous sommes installés en plein air, de jolies guirlandes décorent les branches, le cadre serait idéal si, juste à côté, les basses d’un groupe hip-hop ne dévastaient pas tout. Mais les sept musiciens se serrent sur la minuscule scène, et tentent de se faire entendre tout en gardant le sourire. Les voix des deux chanteuses se complètent bien, les cuivres donnent une ambiance un peu jazzy, le violon rappelle les débuts d’Arcade Fire…

Les Brooklynois s’apprêtent à sortir un troisième album, Belong, et donc en profitent pour roder les nouvelles chansons. San Fermin s’engage sur des tonalités rêveuses, avec des revirements assez inattendus. Parfois les musiciens prennent le taureau par les cornes pour partir réellement en expérimental – mais en douceur, à la manière de Tunng (lire l’interview). Le souci, c’est que ces musiciens talentueux n’ont pas l’air d’assumer leur côté pop, et parfois cherchent à se prouver des choses sur des improvisations qui paument un peu le public.

Shinobi Ninja

Bienvenue dans les années 90, ces Brooklynois ravivent l’esprit de Rage Against The Machine à leur manière. Une chanteuse aux longues dreadlocks fout le feu de son flow, Un des guitaristes sort d’un clip de skate punk, et le deuxième se prend pour un guitar hero metalleux. Au milieu de quelques dabs, ils se lancent dans une chanson trap – pour le délire , puis reviennent à ce rap énervé.

Mais le public n’est pas au bout de ses surprises ! Shinobi Ninja tape une petite phase pop car ils sont « sensibles » nous confient-ils. Avant de balancer un medley des années 90 : I like to move it move it / This is how we do it. Tout va bien !

Ratboys
D’une voix très juvénile, une chanteuse à bonnet rayé et pompon nous raconte des petites histoire sur des rythmes pop. Parfois une trompette fait une apparition, parfois le groupe au look bien geek s’amuse à ralentir, ou s’énerve subitement. Rien ne paraît prémédité, on dirait une récréation de primaire.

Finalement on se laisse attraper par ces sympathiques compositions, qui décrivent ces moments d’adolescence, où l’on attend… quoi donc, on n’en sait rien, mais l’excitation est palpable. Et finalement ce décalage entre la voix ingénue et les guitares qui s’amusent parfois à délaisser le blues pour partir en stoner, c’est assez marrant.

Spiral Stairs
Attention aux fans de Pavement, Spiral Stairs vient de sortir Doris and the Daggers. Un album qu’il a eu le temps de composer entre Preston School of Industry, une tournée avec Pavement, et d’autres projets sur le feu ici ou là – ah oui, et sa vie de famille ! Ce qui explique les huit années qui séparent ce deuxième album de The Real Feel.

Cet album n’a d’ailleurs failli pas voir le jour, car juste avant d’entrer en studio, et de l’enregistrer rapidement avec Matt Harris et Darius Minwalla, ce dernier décède subitement. Ce Doris and the Daggers est donc un album chargé d’émotions. Mais à quelque chose malheur est bon, car ce conteur hors pair qu’est Scott Kannberg a ainsi réussi à trouver les mots justes. En tous cas, s’ils ont un peu l’air de (très) vieux adolescents sur scène, Spiral Stairs a toujours l’art de composer de superbes chansons pop.

A noter que Matt Berninger est aussi invité sur l’album, mais qu’il n’était malheureusement pas sur scène ce soir.

Sextile

Au Barracuda, la soirée était un peu compliquée. Les Italiens de Soviet Soviet ont été excusés de leur absence par les douanes américaines qui leur ont refusé le visa. Alors que bon, comme SxSW ne rémunère aucun groupe (oui oui !) ils n’avaient pas besoin d’autorisation de travail… Et la deuxième annulation était celle de James Chance & The Contorsions – figure de la no wave dans les années 70 ! Mais ça nous a permis de découvrir Sextile.

Le jeune groupe tient très bien son audience, même quand les musiciens se plantent en beauté, ils le font avec panache. Sextile nous livre un post-punk menaçant, dangereux, hypnotisant. Le chanteur Brady Kheen arrive à communiquer des ondes perturbées, tout en gardant un sang-froid impressionnant. A revoir !

Creepoid
Dans l’ombre et la fumée, Creepoid font crisser leurs guitares. Le chanteur au look de rat de bibliothèque parvient, de sa guitare lascive, à séduire le public, suffisamment pour qu’il baisse sa garde, restant ainsi désemparé quand d’un coup de corde, Sean Miller déclenche le signal de l’apocalypse aux autres musiciens. Tout le monde, y compris la petite bassiste aux cheveux rose, se démène, pour nous laisser subitement en suspens !

Le chant est trainant, les batteries sont morbides, Creepoid porte bien son nom. Mais les paroles sont étudiées, et les compositions savent se faire plus douces, avec des chœurs rassurants. Anna Troxell tourne sur elle-même entre deux « wouhou », puis voilà que Sean Miller se met à frapper furieusement sa guitare, sans raison aucune. Malgré ces revirements, c’est un de ces groupes dont on aurait envie de faire partie.

Slaves
Avant de prendre sa place derrière les fûts, Tai Wright – avec son raton laveur sur la tête – regarde intensément le public, scrutant chacun… Puis d’une voix extrêmement rauque, déclenche les éléments. Trois minutes plus tard, le voilà torse nu, en train de tout démonter tel un bébé capricieux tandis que Danny Webster – tatoué jusqu’au cou – sautille sur place avec sa guitare.

Ca beugle beaucoup sur scène, comme pour pallier au fait qu’ils ne sont que deux – ou pour se faire entendre car comme ils nous le confient, le son est dégueulasse sur scène. Hop un gros rot et on enchaîne. C’est le signal pour le premier pogo, mais pas les gentillets parisiens, non, ceux qui poussent le guitariste à demander à la foule de se calmer car un appareil photo a manqué d’y passer.

Pour récupérer d’autant d’énergie déployée entre deux courts morceaux, Slaves bavarde avec la foule : on apprend donc que Tai Wright s’est improvisé batteur, ou qu’ils se sont fait engueuler lors du premier concert parce qu’ils n’avaient pas de bassiste. Puis ils repartent dans ‘Cheer Up London’, dans lequel le chanteur déverse sa rage, puis demande à chacun de faire un gros câlin à son voisin.

Pour le final, sur ‘Beauty Quest’, Danny se retrouve bien entendu sur le bar, puis les compères se cassent en nous déclarant que “You are all Slaves” – et quelque part, c’est pas faux, on est convaincus.
